Yes the Nikon D5100 works perfectly excepting the bulb mode.

Generally this kind of error is related to some hardware fail, like usb cable or usb port, try a different USB port if you have in pc or a another cable

Try to delete the c:\ProgramData\digiCamControl folder

This already is included in application check this link http://digicamcontrol.com/blog/news_2.0.45 (it is same in latest version too)

The D3100 is use WIA driver to operate maybe in newer windows updates this is disabled.
Try to run in administrator mode the "c:\Program Files (x86)\digiCamControl\regwia.bat" file
