Possibly too stupid...microsoft codec packs are not compatible with win8...or at least as far as I can find. Anybody got a good link? D4 RAW cannot be read without.

On Windows 8 the raw codec is installed via Windows Update. Just run Windows Update and check for updates to install. The Nikon D4 was supported in the first release on Win8 in the fall of 2012.
