Control of multiple Xiaomi Yi cameras

Post by DKomar » Sun Mar 20, 2016 11:38 pm

Dear specialists,

we are students and we are thinking of a construction of relatively cheap 3D full body scanner. For that relatively simultaneous snapshots from about 60 cameras have to be done and than transferred to computer. We were amazed by DigiCamControl software and because of that we thought of choosing Xiaomi Yi cameras. But if it is possible to control so many of them is not clear for us. Are Xiaomi Yi cameras controlled via USB or WiFi by DigiCamControl? Is there as well impossible to trigger all the cameras relatively simultaneously (for us the complete trigger in 5 seconds would be already fine)? And did somebody tried to use so many cameras with DigiCamControl? Does the program work well or it will be problematic and the program will work very slow or crash?

Unfortunately it is too expansive simply to buy 60 cameras and try :)
Thank you for your answers and for developing this nice software.

Hi, hard yo tell you something sure... The application it is used daily basis connected with 53 Nikon D3200 and working whiteout any issue, but USB connection it is used and a external device to trigger. Via wifi should be same behavior even the communication should be faster that usb but the file transfer is more slowly but i have only one Yi camera so i can't test it ... If you can get 2-3 camera and make some tests and if you find any issue i can make improvements in this part of the application.

Thank you a lot for the answer, 53 cameras working fine sounds convincing. Still I didn't understand, do Yi connects to DigiCamControl via WiFi or USB, or both are possible? Which connection did you use with your Yi camera.

Only wifi connection is possible, this may complicate thinks a lite bit, you need same number of wifi network interface because the camera act like a access point. I saw somewhere a script which make possible to connect camera to a wifi router but i don't find the page again

Yes, I have found this page. Hopefully it works:) I will try first with one camera and than, if everything will be fine, I will buy one more and try it.

Different scripts for Xiaomi Yi (including connection to WiFi-network) are here: http://nutseynuts.blogspot.de/2015/06/x ... ripts.html

But we checked that unfortunately fisheye lens of Xiaomi Yi makes it unusable for 3D Scanning :(

Is there not a way to communicate with a live view from the Yi camera over USB? On the "Cameras" list, the only cameras that specify that control is WiFi only are the Sony cameras, where the Yi camera doesn't indicate that it excludes USB.

I updated the camera list, the yi camera can be controlled only using wifi, no documentation about usb control or any sign of this can be done

Hi Duka Istvan,

I am new here. I had a project ongoing so I jz wan to reconfirm, so now digicamcontrol can control multiple xiao yi action cam simultaneously, to take picture and save to pc via wifi? If so, I will buy few to test out the detail.

Thanks in advance for all the hard work, great job!

Jazz
