Canon EOS 450D as webcam?

Hey! I have a canon EOS 450D and I'd love to use it for streaming. As far as I understand it, you can take photos but you cannot do video on it. Why? How does these things work anyhow? I'm a computer scientist, I could take a look at the code and help out if you don't have the time. Cheers.

This it connected with camera firmware, nu such function is implemented in the camera firmware
