Canon m200, Tamron f/2.8 90mm, focus motor doesn't do single steps

I'm trying to do focus stacking. I'd like to use digiCamControl but when it tries to adjust the focus the lens does not respond to the single step commands sent to the motor. I can hear it click and see the image shake on live preview but the focus doesn't actually change 99% of the time. The autofocus works. In Canon's software EOS Utility there are buttons which move the focus larger amounts, and those work. Their software also has a single step command which does not work. I don't think the lens focus motor is defective because I had a v1 and replaced it with a v2 version of the lens and it does the same thing, but I did buy both used so maybe their stepper motors just fail frequently.

Is there any way to change the number of steps digiCamControl sends? I tried decreasing the "wait time between steps" option to the minimum (5ms) but this doesn't seem to help either, if I could set this lower it might work. Thanks!
